Fionn Murtagh is an Engineer and Mathematician with degrees from Ireland and France. Longest work assignment was in Bavaria in the space sector. Formerly President of the Classification Society (North America). Editor-in-Chief of The Computer Journal (British Computer Society and Oxford University Press). Member of the Royal Irish Academy, of Academia Europaea, and Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition.

Professor and Head of School of Computer Science and Informatics, De Montfort University. Formerly University of London and now Visiting Professor. 2007-2012 on assignment with Irish government agency Science Foundation Ireland in association with IDA (Industrial Development Authority) and Enterprise Ireland, in research commercialization, with a budget of 1.5 billion euro. Responsibility at SFI for ICT (Information & Communications Technologies) and all aspects of Sustainable Energy technologies.

Research: digital content analytics, computational science, high performance search and discovery. Narrativization; multivariate data analysis methods and software; image and signal processing – multiscale morphological modelling. Erdös number 2, h-index 45.
